I finally made it! I’m in the school at last.
It wasn’t easy, but I made it in one piece and I’m eager to start working. But
let’s start from the beginning, I’ll tell you how I got here.

¡Lo he conseguido! Por fin estoy en la escuela. No fue fácil, pero estoy
de una pieza y con muchas ganas de empezar a trabajar. Pero empecemos por el
principio, os contaré como llegué hasta aquí

Goodbyes… they’re always hard… It was very
tough to say goodbye to Sonia, really the toughest of all… The travel by plane
was really uneventful, a 2 hour flyover in Doha (Qatar) and I landed in
Kathmandu about 3:30 pm local time, after a total of 14 hours between the two
flights. We were only a handful of westerners on the second flight; most of the
pasengers were Nepalis returning from their jobs in Qatar. We were greeted by
quite heavy rain but it went away while I checked through immigration and claimed
my backpack. I got out of the airport drifting through taxi drivers eager to
take you anywhere; I exchanged some money, and called Anup, my Couchsurfing
contact, from a public phone.

Las despedidas… qué duras son… Fue muy difícil decirle adiós a
Sonia, realmente lo más difícil de todo… El viaje en avión sin demasiada
novedad, escala de 2 horas en Doha (Qatar) y aterricé en Katmandú sobre las
15:30 hora local tras 14 horas entre los dos vuelos. En el segundo íbamos ya
muy pocos occidentales, la mayoría eran nepalíes regresando de sus trabajos en
Qatar. Nos recibió una lluvia bastante fuerte pero que se fue en seguida, lo
que tardé en pasar inmigración y recoger mi mochila. Salí del aeropuerto
esquivando a taxistas ansiosos de llevarte a algún lugar, cambié algo de dinero
y llamé por teléfono a Anup, mi contacto de Couchsurfing.

He came to pick me up half an hour later on a
bike, and I don’t know how we managed to go the two of us with all my luggage.
But what a way to learn the reality of this country… It’s a devastated city,
very dirty, poverty everywhere you look… Driving around here is a total chaos,
I can’t even begin to tell. Badly paved roads, everyone is constantly honking,
overtaking anytime they feel like it, people crossing the street like nobody’s
business, cows in the middle of the road and such pollution that it barely lets
you breath… Luckily my rider was very skilled, it’s almost a miracle I haven’t
witnessed any accidents. Anyway, after a rather long ride, we got to his house,
a nice one in fact, considering the surroundings. Anup introduced me to
his two sisters and his sister in law, and left me with them while he went to pick
up his wife, Deepa, to whom I was later introduced too. They’re such friendly
and nice people and we had a great evening that we spent talking about our
cultures and jobs. The girls made a traditional dinner and after more chatting
it was time to get some needed rest.

A la media hora vino a recogerme en una moto, y no se ni como
conseguimos ir los dos con todo mi equipaje. Y qué manera de conocer la
realidad de este país… Es una ciudad devastada, muy sucia, pobreza por todos
lados… Conducir aquí es un auténtico caos, no os podéis hacer una idea.
Carreteras mal pavimentadas, todo el mundo pitando, adelantando donde les da la
gana, gente cruzando por cualquier sitio sin inmutarse, vacas en medio de la
carretera y una contaminación enorme que apenas te deja respirar… Menos mal
que mi piloto era experto, es un milagro que no haya visto ningún accidente. En
fin, tras un trayecto bastante largo llegamos a su casa, un dúplex que la
verdad no estaba nada mal teniendo en cuenta los alrededores. Anup me presentó
a sus hermanas y a su cuñada y me dejó con ellas mientras iba a recoger a su
mujer, Deepa, a la que conocí más tarde. Es una gente realmente hospitalaria y
simpática y fue una tarde noche muy agradable, que pasamos hablando de nuestras
costumbres y nuestros trabajos. Las chicas prepararon una cena tradicional y
tras un poco de sobremesa llegó la hora de descansar por fin.

The next morning, Anup took me on his bike to
a road where I took a city bus that went to some kind of bus station. It
must
have been like an hour ride and I met a couple of really nice guys, Real
Madrid
supporters and whose favorite country was Spain, if you can imagine. So
you can
get a picture of just how nice these people are, one of them paid for my
ticket. Unbelievable. Things started to go South when I took a van that
was
going to Pokhara, the second largest city, and that went through
Damauli, the
closest town to the school. The problem was that these kind of buses,
which are
the ones used by locals, they don’t pick people up in one place and
leave at
the scheduled time, no. They go round and round shouting its destination
until
they manage to fill it. In my case, that I got up the first one, easily
an hour
and a half went by before another 16 people came in and we were on our
way. But
if that wasn’t bad enough, about half way through they picked up a woman
with a
small kid, and her three goats. I don’t know how they did it but they
fit the goats in the trunk… Now, the landscapes were amazing and you can
enjoy them once you
accept you’re going to die in that damned van.

A la mañana siguiente Anup me acercó en su moto a una carretera donde
cogí un bus urbano que me llevó a una especie de estación. El trayecto debió de
ser de una hora y conocí a un par de chavales muy majos, seguidores del Real
Madrid y que decían que su país favorito era España, si os lo podéis creer.
Para que veáis hasta qué punto esta gente es hospitalaria, uno de ellos pagó mi
billete. Increíble. La cosa se empezó a torcer cuando cogí una furgoneta que
decía que iba a Pokhara, la segunda ciudad más poblada, y que pasaba por
Damauli, el pueblo más cercano a la escuela. El problema fue que este tipo de
“autobuses”, que es el utilizado por los locales, no recoge a la
gente en un sitio y se va a su hora, no. Va dando vueltas por un par de calles
principales y gritando a dónde va hasta que consiguen llenarlo. En mi caso, que
subí el primero, estuvimos por lo menos una hora y media pululando hasta que
entraron 16 personas más. La cosa no acaba ahí, el tipo que conducía era un
maldito loco, adelantando como si no hubiera un mañana. ¿Línea contínua en
curva? ¡No problem! Y la carretera sólo tenía curvas… Para rematar la faena,
como a mitad de camino recogieron a una mujer con un niño pequeño, y sus tres
cabras. Y no sé cómo las metieron en el maletero… Eso sí, el paisaje es
impresionante y lo puedes disfrutar una vez aceptas que vas a morir en esa
furgoneta del demonio.

Finally, after 4 hours of bends, heat and
fear, I got off in Damauli, where I took yet another van that was supposed to
leave me near the school. I squeezed in and that thing left me on a dirt road
from where I started walking in the direction they told me. Apparently a 10
minute stroll. Nothing further from the truth, I lost track of the time, but it
was terrible, I was sweating like never in my life, carrying 30 kg uphill in
the jungle… I guess the meaning of this story is that you can get to where you
didn’t think you could, because in the end I managed to find the school on the
top of a hill and thanks to the help of a woman I found on the way, and who
guided me to the entrance. There, I was greeted by three volunteers, two
Nepalese and a Swiss, who took me to a shared room where there are about 10
beds, and it’s where I am right now writing with the sounds of crickets and
someone’s snores. So, after leaving my things they took me to another building
where I found about 12 men having dinner, and among them there was Manjil, the
principal. They were expecting me, they made some room for me and gave me some
food and drink, which I was desperately needing. After dinner, a little
group went to a small bar where we drank a strong local drink and chatted for a
while until we decided it was late and went to bed.

Por fin, tras 4 horas de curvas, calor y
miedo, me bajé en
Damauli, donde cogí oootro mini bus que supuestamente me dejaría cerca de la
escuela. Me metí como pude y aquel cacharro me dejó en una carretera de tierra
desde donde empecé a caminar en la dirección que me indicaron. Supuestamente en
10 minutos llegaría. Nada más lejos de la realidad, yo no sé lo que tardaría
pero fue horrible, no he sudado más en mi vida, cargando 30 kg cuesta arriba
por una jungla. Supongo que la moraleja es que puedes llegar donde no creías
que podías, porque al final conseguí encontrar la escuela en lo alto de una
colina y gracias a la ayuda de una mujer que me encontré por el camino, y que
me guió hasta la puerta. Allí me recibieron tres voluntarios, dos nepalíes y
uno suizo que me llevaron a la habitación compartida donde hay unas 10 camas y
donde estoy ahora mismo escribiendo al sonido de los grillos y de los ronquidos
de alguien. En fin, tras dejar las cosas me llevaron a otro edificio donde
había un grupo de unos 12 hombres cenando, entre ellos Manjil, el director. Me
estaban esperando y me hicieron hueco y me dieron de comer y beber, que lo
necesitaba ya urgentemente. Tras la cena, un grupito fuimos a una especie de
cantina donde tomamos un brebaje local para valientes y charlamos un buen rato hasta
que decidimos que ya era tarde y nos fuimos a descansar.
